Marshall Public Library recalls SolarEclipse glasses

Marshall Public Library is recalling all Solar Eclipse glasses given to the public from August 1st through August 12, 2017 because they have the potential to be unsafe for viewing the Solar Eclipse. The manufacturer of the glasses American Paper Optics was an authorized manufacturer of NASA glasses, however, the glasses purchased through Amazon under this manufacturers name failed to meet certain safety requirements and are therefore under a nationwide recall.

"To protect your eyes when viewing the sun or an eclipse, NASA and the American Astronomical Society (AAS) advise you to use solar eclipse glasses orother solar filters from recommended manufacturers. Viewing the sun or an eclipse using any other glasses or filters could result in loss of vision or permanent blindness."

Patrons who received Solar Eclipse glasses from the library between the dates of August 1st through 12th should either throw the glasses away or return them to the library for a new pair of glasses. The new glasses purchased directlyfrom the manufacturer will arrive Thursday, August 17th. To view recommended list of Solar Eclipse glasses manufacturers please visit https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/solar-filters or you may visit the library for a complete listing.

For more information on safely viewing the eclipse, please visit the NASA eclipse safety site.

For information on detecting conterfeit, unsafe eclipse glasses, go here.

The Solar Eclipse program for Monday, August 21st from 12:30 to 2:30 PM is still scheduled. For those who want to be a part of the program but do not have glasses or wish to watch the eclipse on television, the library will have NASA streaming live in the Dale McConchie meeting room along with moon pies, punch, and trivia.

No registration is required for this free event. If you have questions you may call the library at 217-826-2535.
